How to help a 3-5 year old write their name
- Capital first letter, lowercase rest. "Emma", not "EMMA" — it is what they will write at school, and lowercase letters are what most of reading is made of.
- Big before small. Let them trace at this size before shrinking down to normal writing paper.
- Say the letter as you trace it. Naming the letter while the hand moves is what links the shape to the sound.
- Four lines is a lot. One line a day is plenty at this age. Stop while they still want to do it.
